In 2023, ECDC will implement a comprehensive programme aimed at strengthening health security in the EU's neighbourhood regions, stemming from the needs identified through continuous dialogue with partner countries.

The EU Initiative in Health Security (2020-2025) aims at tackling cross-border health security threats in the EU enlargement and EU Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) partner countries through enhanced regional cooperation, trainings and optimising of skills. These efforts include improving capacity-building, risk assessments, and preparedness and response capabilities.

Planned activities for 2023 include:

  • A refresher training course in epidemic intelligence
  • A regional workshop on recovering from major health crises (EU’s Southern Neighbourhood)
  • A workshop on addressing West Nile virus from a One Health perspective
  • A training workshop on simulation exercises to strengthen emergency preparedness and response planning
  • A simulation exercise course on antimicrobial resistance
  • A course on social and behavioural methods for disease prevention and control
  • A workshop on bio-risk awareness and mitigation.

The training of 32 health professionals in Cohorts 4 and 5 of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (MediPIET) is ongoing; Cohort 6 will start in September 2023.

MediPIET will deliver eight modules, additional ‘inject day’ activities, training of trainers, network-strengthening activities, and the cascading of training in partner countries for the benefit of fellows and nominated participants from partner countries.

ECDC will continue to support the establishment of the MediPIET Alumni Network (MediAN) and will consolidate the results of the regional training needs assessment and its impact on the core competencies and the curriculum of the training programme.

To strengthen knowledge-sharing and the overall integration of partner countries into ECDC’s systems, observers will regularly be invited to take part in the relevant ECDC networks as well as participate in ECDC thematic events based on country-specific interests.

In 2023, ECDC will organise an exchange of experts programme within specific disease areas, providing an opportunity for experts from ENP partner countries to learn from the experience of EU Member States and to share their own experiences.
