The Annual Epidemiological Report 2013 offers an overview of more than 50 diseases and pathogens monitored by ECDC, using 2011 surveillance data and 2012 epidemic intelligence data.
The report offers an overview of diseases and pathogens monitored by ECDC as part of its mandated disease surveillance programme for the countries of the European Union as well as Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway.
In addition to the comprehensive coverage of communicable diseases, the report summarises the results from ECDC’s first ever point prevalence survey on healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial use in European acute care hospitals. The survey was carried out in 2011 and 2012 in more than a thousand hospitals across 30 European countries. It is the most authoritative study on this topic in Europe.
The final chapter provides insights into how ECDC's monitors potential health threats (‘epidemic intelligence’), for example during mass-gathering events such as the London Olympics or the UEFA soccer championships.
