For 2019, 27 countries reported 4 363 cases of dengue, of which 4 020 (92%) were confirmed. The number of cases in 2019 was almost double that for 2018, reflecting the intense circulation of the virus on a global scale.

The EU/EEA notification rate in 2019 was 0.9 cases per 100 000 population. The highest rates in both men and women were among those aged 25–44 years. The number of cases peaked in August and November. Sixty-four percent of the cases with known probable country of infection were imported from Asia, mostly from Thailand and India. Twelve autochthonous dengue cases were reported from the EU/EEA1: by France (n=9), Spain (n=2) and Germany (n=1).

Most autochthonous dengue cases were the result of the virus being transmitted by a mosquito vector. One case in Spain resulted from sexual transmission and the case in Germany was the result of laboratory transmission.
