Since 2009, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has coordinated the enhanced surveillance of sexually transmitted infections in Europe. The goals of the STI surveillance network include strengthening the surveillance of gonococcal susceptibility in European Union/European Economic Area Member States, developing and implementing sentinel surveillance of antimicrobial resistant gonorrhoea to a range of therapeutically relevant antimicrobials and to implementing an external quality assurance scheme for gonococcal antimicrobial susceptibility testing across Europe are the focused aims of the network.
