Malaria - Annual Epidemiological Report for 2018
ECDC’s annual surveillance reports provide a wealth of epidemiological data to support decision-making at the national level. They are mainly intended for public health professionals and policymakers involved in disease prevention and control programmes.
Executive summary
- For 2018, 8 349 malaria cases were reported in the EU/EEA, 8 347 (> 99%) of which were confirmed.
- Among 7 338 cases with known importation status, 99.8% were travel related. Fourteen confirmedcases were reported as acquired in the EU (ten by Greece, two by Spain, and one each by France andItaly).
- A marked seasonal trend was observed across all countries, with cases increasing during andimmediately after the summer holiday months (July–September).
- As in previous years, the overall rate of confirmed malaria cases was higher among men than women(1.6 cases and 0.7 cases per 100 000 population, respectively; male-to-female ratio 1.9:1).
