Our guiding principles

The work of the Centre is characterised by a high level of professionalism and efficiency. We believe each and every staff member’s contribution is important in making the Centre a good place to work with a strong team spirit. We can offer the opportunity to be an important part of a dynamically developing European Agency.

ECDC values diversity and welcomes staff without any distinction on the grounds of age, race, political, philosophical, or religious conviction, sex or sexual orientation and regardless of disabilities, marital status or family situation.

The core values of ECDC are to be a quality-driven, service-minded organisation that acts as one team. We expect all staff to live these values.

Open access for scientific content

ECDC has an obligation to ensure that published work generated by the Centre is disseminated and is easily accessible to all EU citizens. All outputs with scientific content produced by, or on behalf of, the Centre are therefore published as open access.

Authorship

The ECDC authorship policy provides guidance for authors of written work produced by, or on behalf of ECDC, including for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The policy sets out criteria to determine how the contribution of each author should be acknowledged, and outlines concomitant roles and responsibilities of authors in order to ensure that fair recognition is given for work done on behalf of the Centre by ECDC staff members or externals. The ECDC authorship policy was issued in 2017, and the Centre renewed its commitment to a fair recognition of contributions to its scientific work and outputs in 2023

Transparency and independence

As stated in ECDC’s Founding Regulation, “the confidence of the Community institutions, the general public and interested parties in ECDC is essential. For this reason, it is vital to ensure its independence, high scientific quality, transparency and efficiency”.

Annual declarations

Annual Declarations of Interest and Declarations of Commitment from the Director and Heads of Unit are published online to ensure that they do not, in the performance of their duties, deal with matters in which they may, directly or indirectly, have a personal interest that could impair their independence.
